In 1987, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, a gay-rights activist, were shot to death in City Hall by former Supervisor Dan White. (White served five years in prison for manslaughter. He was found dead Oct. 21, 1985, a suicide.)
